History · Administration and Economy UGC NET December 2015 History
Below are two statements: one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other as Reason (R). Assertion (A): There were many good reasons for avoiding technological innovation or any form of mechanization of Indian manufactures in medieval India. Reason (R): As any innovation implied a measure of risk and some investment of capital, the Indian workman living on the margin of subsistence had hardly any means to undertake it; in such a situation only a limited technological innovation initiated by the state or by the profit-seeking merchant could be expected. Choose the correct code.
A(A) is correct but (R) partly explains (A). ✓ Correct
B(A) is correct and (R) fully explains (A).
C(R) is correct, but (A) is wrong.
D(A) is correct, but (R) is wrong.
Correct answer: (A) (A) is correct but (R) partly explains (A). — The assertion is correct and the reason partly explains it, so the answer is the first code.
Explanation
The assertion is correct and the reason partly explains it, so the answer is the first code.
There were indeed reasons to avoid mechanization of Indian manufactures.
The reason about the poor workman is also correct as far as it goes.
A workman on the margin of subsistence could not invest in new methods.
But this is only a part of the full explanation of the assertion.
So the reason partly, not fully, explains the assertion.
