Given below are an Assertion (A) and a Reason (R). Choose the correct answer from the codes given below.

Assertion (A): The Shimla Pact was signed by India and Pakistan in 1972.

Reason (R): It provides that the two countries will solve their disputes through the mediation of other countries.

ABoth A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A
CA is true, but R is false ✓ Correct
DA is false, but R is true
Correct answer: (C) A is true, but R is false — A is true but R is false, so that is the answer.
Explanation
A is true but R is false, so that is the answer.
The Shimla Agreement was indeed signed by India and Pakistan on 2 July 1972, so A is correct.
It followed the 1971 war and the creation of Bangladesh.
Its core principle is that India and Pakistan will settle disputes bilaterally and peacefully.
It expressly rules out third-party mediation, the opposite of what R claims.
So R misstates the agreement and is false.
India still cites Shimla to insist that the Kashmir issue is a strictly bilateral matter.
