Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion A and the other labelled as Reason R. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

Assertion (A): In 1941, an Eastern Front opened up through the German invasion of Yugoslavia, Greece and the Soviet Union.

Reason (R): Nazi expansionism in Asia has been associated with the outbreak of the Second World War.

ABoth A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
CA is correct but R is not correct ✓ Correct
DA is not correct but R is correct
Correct answer: (C) A is correct but R is not correct — The assertion is correct but the reason is not, so only the assertion holds true.
Explanation
The assertion is correct but the reason is not, so only the assertion holds true.
In 1941 Germany invaded Yugoslavia, Greece and then the Soviet Union.
The attack on the USSR, Operation Barbarossa, opened the Eastern Front of the war.
This makes the assertion an accurate account of the events of 1941.
The reason places Nazi expansionism in Asia, which is incorrect.
Nazi Germany's expansion was centred on Europe, not Asia.
Japan, not Germany, drove the Axis expansion in Asia.
So the reason is geographically wrong and cannot explain the assertion.
