ABoth A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A
BA is correct, but R is false
CBoth A and R are false
DBoth A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A ✓ Correct
Correct answer: (D) Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A — Both statements are correct and the reason explains the assertion, so the answer is both correct with R explaining A.
Explanation
Both statements are correct and the reason explains the assertion, so the answer is both correct with R explaining A.
The British introduced the Permanent Settlement in Bengal, the Ryotwari in Madras and Bombay, and the Mahalwari in the north.
Each system fixed a heavy and rigid revenue demand on the land.
The demand had to be paid in cash and on fixed dates regardless of harvest.
This pressure forced peasants into debt, loss of land and growing poverty.
So the different tenures directly led to the impoverishment of the peasantry.
