History · Society and Culture UGC NET November 2017 History
Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). Select the correct answer from the codes given below.

Assertion (A): The famous Persian poet Badr Chach of the Tughlaq period, who came just a little after Amir Khusrau, says about music that 'the basic modes (parda) are none except ten and two', and he fixes each one of them to particular parts of the day and night.

Reason (R): Amir Khusrau speaks of ten pardas (modes) only; the lists given by these two poets and those found in works of lexicons and musical works do tally.

ABoth A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A
CA is true, but R is false ✓ Correct
DA is false, but R is true
Correct answer: (C) A is true, but R is false — The assertion is true but the reason is false, so the answer is A true but R false.
Explanation
The assertion is true but the reason is false, so the answer is A true but R false.
Badr Chach of the Tughlaq period did say that the basic modes were twelve.
He fixed each mode to a part of the day or night.
So the assertion is true.
But it is not true that all these lists tally with one another.
The lists of the two poets and those in the lexicons and musical works do not fully agree, so the reason is false.
