Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). Select the correct answer from the codes given below.

Assertion (A): In the course of his Indian tour in the 5th century, Fa-hsien reported that no respectable person ate meat in this country.

Reason (R): Asoka, who himself was a strong believer in the doctrine of non-injury to men and animals (ahimsa), had banned animal sacrifices and regulated the slaughter of animals.

ABoth A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A ✓ Correct
CA is true, but R is false
DA is false, but R is true
Correct answer: (B) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A — Both statements are true but the reason does not explain the assertion, so the answer is both true with R not explaining A.
Explanation
Both statements are true but the reason does not explain the assertion, so the answer is both true with R not explaining A.
Fa-hsien did report in the fifth century that respectable people did not eat meat.
So the assertion is true.
Asoka did believe in ahimsa and banned animal sacrifices and regulated slaughter.
So the reason is true as well.
But Asoka's measures, centuries earlier, do not directly explain the food habits Fa-hsien observed.
