History · Historical Method and Historiography UGC NET December 2018 History
Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). Select the correct answer from the codes given below.

Assertion (A): Historians cannot avoid making moral judgements in their writings.

Reason (R): The historian works upon the evidence of the past from the standpoint of the present.

ABoth A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A ✓ Correct
CA is true, but R is false
DA is false, but R is true
Correct answer: (B) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A — Both statements are true but the reason is not the correct explanation, so the answer is both true, R not the explanation.
Explanation
Both statements are true but the reason is not the correct explanation, so the answer is both true, R not the explanation.
It is true that historians cannot fully avoid moral judgements in their writings.
It is also true that the historian works on the past from the standpoint of the present.
Both statements are therefore correct.
But the second does not directly explain why moral judgements are unavoidable.
So both are true while the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
