Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
Assertion (A): The supreme council of the Governor-General at Calcutta gave extraordinary powers to Special Commissions to capture and punish the rebels of the 1857 Revolt, in its Act XIV of June 1857.
Reason (R): The primary aim of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's Causes of the Indian Revolt (1858), then a government sub-judge, was to show the loyalty of the Muslims, who in the years following the rebellion were viewed with suspicion and disfavour.
ABoth A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are correct but R is not the correct explanation of A ✓ Correct
CA is correct but R is not correct
DA is not correct but R is correct
Correct answer: (B) Both A and R are correct but R is not the correct explanation of A — Both are correct but R does not explain A, so the answer is both correct with R not the explanation.
Explanation
★Both are correct but R does not explain A, so the answer is both correct with R not the explanation.
★The supreme council did give extraordinary powers to Special Commissions through Act XIV of June 1857.
★Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's Causes of the Indian Revolt did aim to show the loyalty of the Muslims.
★Both statements are therefore correct.
★But the purpose of Sir Syed's work does not explain why the council passed Act XIV.
★So both are correct while R is not the correct explanation of A.
