Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Assertion (A): James Mill described the ancient period of Indian history as the Hindu period and the medieval period as the Muslim period.

Reason (R): He failed to characterise the modern period as the Christian period.

ABoth A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A ✓ Correct
CA is true but R is false
DA is false but R is true
Correct answer: (B) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A — Both are true but R does not explain A, so the answer is both true with R not explaining A.
Explanation
Both are true but R does not explain A, so the answer is both true with R not explaining A.
James Mill, in his History of British India, divided Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and British periods.
He described the ancient period as the Hindu period and the medieval period as the Muslim period.
He did not name the modern period the Christian period but called it the British period.
This periodisation has been criticised for reducing whole eras to a single religious identity.
So both statements are true, but the second is an independent observation, not the cause of the first.
