The widely used code for exchanging character information between terminals is ASCII.

BCD encodes only decimal digits, not a full character interchange set.

EBCDIC is an IBM mainframe code, not the general interchange standard meant here.

Since only one truly fits, all of the above cannot hold.

ASCII assigns a number to each letter, digit and symbol.

Add-on: standard ASCII uses 7 bits to represent 128 characters.
