Adolescence is the most important period of human life. Poets have described it as the spring of human life and an important period of the total life span. The word adolescence is derived from the Greek word 'adolescere' which means "to grow to maturity".

Psychologists have given many definitions of it from time to time. Some psychologists define it as the transition period of life. In this transition period, the child experiences many changes.

This period is the period between childhood and adulthood. Sometimes it is called adolescence. According to A.T. Jersild, "Adolescence is the period when boys and girls move mentally, emotionally, socially and physically from childhood to adulthood".

Chronologically, adolescence is roughly the period between 12 years to about the early 20s. The beginning of adolescence varies from culture to culture depending on the socio-economic conditions of the country. During this period, an individual undergoes significant changes in all developmental dimensions.
