Calcutta, Bombay and Madras universities of 1857 were modelled on the University of London.

Oxford University, a collegiate residential system, was not the pattern chosen for them.

Cambridge University, similarly collegiate, did not serve as their model.

The University of Edinburgh was not the design template for these three.

London then worked mainly as an affiliating and examining body, which suited the Indian setup.

Wood's Despatch of 1854 had recommended these universities.
