Paper 1 · Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude UGC NET December 2023 (12.12.2023) Shift-I
Two friends A and B live 140 km apart. They both drive in a straight line towards each other to meet. If A drives at 80 km/h and B drives at 40 km/h, then how many kilometres apart will they be exactly 45 minutes before they meet?
A70 km
B90 km ✓ Correct
C100 km
D80 km
Correct answer: (B) 90 km — They will be 90 km apart 45 minutes before they meet, so that is the answer.
Explanation
They will be 90 km apart 45 minutes before they meet, so that is the answer.
Their combined speed of approach is 80 plus 40, which is 120 km/h.
Together they close the 140 km gap and then meet.
In the 45 minutes just before meeting, they still cover distance at 120 km/h.
In 45 minutes, that is three-fourths of an hour, they close 120 times 0.75, which is 90 km.
So 45 minutes before meeting they are 90 km apart.
