When did India become party to Convention on Biodiversity (CBD)?

India became a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1994 after ratifying it.

The convention itself was opened for signature at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.

India signed it in 1992 but became a full party only on ratification in 1994.

The years 1993 and 1995 do not mark India's entry into the treaty.

The convention aims at conservation, sustainable use and fair sharing of biodiversity benefits.

India later enacted the Biological Diversity Act in 2002 to give it effect.
