UGC NET June 2024 Re-Exam (23.08.2024) Shift-II
A ship is heading towards the shore. When it is 32 miles from the shore, an aircraft whose speed is 15 times that of the ship is sent to deliver supplies. At what distance from the shore will the seaplane reach the ship?
A30 miles ✓ Correct
B25 miles
C15 miles
D10 miles
Correct answer: (A) 30 miles — The seaplane reaches the ship 30 miles from the shore, so that is the answer.
Explanation
★The seaplane reaches the ship 30 miles from the shore, so that is the answer.
★Let the ship's speed be v, so the aircraft's speed is 15v.
★They move towards each other over the 32-mile gap.
★Their combined speed is v plus 15v, which is 16v, closing 32 miles.
★In that time the aircraft covers fifteen parts out of the sixteen parts of the gap.
★Taking fifteen out of sixteen of 32 miles gives 30 miles from the shore.
