A shopkeeper purchases a packet of 60 pens at Rs 10 per pen. He sells a part of the packet at a profit of 40 percent and, on the remaining part, he bears a loss of 20 percent. If his overall profit on the whole packet is 20 percent, find the number of pens he sold at a profit.

A40 ✓ Correct
B30
C20
D35
Correct answer: (A) 40
Explanation

40 pens were sold at a profit.

Total CP = 60 x 10 = 600; overall SP = 600 x 1.20 = 720.

Profit pens sell at 14 each, loss pens at 8 each.

14x + 8(60 - x) = 720.

6x + 480 = 720, so x = 40.
