History · From State to Empire UGC NET December 2022 History (Shift-I)
Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

Assertion (A): The 5th Pillar Edict of Ashoka gives a list of animals that are not to be killed under any circumstances.

Reason (R): King Ashoka thought that the animals that are neither useful nor edible should not be killed.

ABoth A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A ✓ Correct
BBoth A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A
CA is true but R is false
DA is false but R is true
Correct answer: (A) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A — Both are true and R explains A, so the answer is both true with R explaining A.
Explanation
Both are true and R explains A, so the answer is both true with R explaining A.
Ashoka's 5th Pillar Edict gives a list of animals that should never be killed.
He held that animals neither useful nor edible should not be killed.
This very reasoning explains why the edict lists such protected animals.
The edict also lists birds and animals not to be killed on certain days and records the release of 25 prisoners.
So both statements are true and the reason explains the assertion.
