Paper 1 · Logical Reasoning UGC NET December 2021 June 2022 (23.09.2022) Shift-II
Given below are two statements. Statement I: According to the classical Indian school of logic, the method of induction is used to affirm the major premise, since generality or universality cannot be perceived. Statement II: Classical Indian logicians give a separate treatment of the inductive method. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
  • Statement I: In the classical Indian school, induction affirms the major premise because universality cannot be perceived.
  • Statement II: Classical Indian logicians give a separate treatment of the inductive method.
ABoth Statement I and Statement II are true
BBoth Statement I and Statement II are false ✓ Correct
CStatement I is true but Statement II is false
DStatement I is false but Statement II is true
Correct answer: (B) Both Statement I and Statement II are false — The answer is that both statements are false.
Explanation
The answer is that both statements are false.
In the classical Indian system, inference does not affirm the major premise through a separate inductive step in the way stated, so Statement I is false.
Indian logicians do not give a separate, standalone treatment of induction apart from inference.
So Statement II is also false.
Induction there is woven into the working of inference itself.
Thus neither statement is correct.
So the answer is that both statements are false.
