Paper 1 · People, Development and Environment
UGC NET December 2021 June 2022 (29.09.2022) Shift-II
Given below are two statements. Statement I: Increasingly, photovoltaic panels are being used to supplement electrical energy from the power grid. Statement II: One issue with grid-connected photovoltaics is that PV cells produce alternating current (AC) whereas power grids use direct current (DC). In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
- Statement I: Photovoltaic panels are increasingly used to supplement grid electrical energy.
- Statement II: A grid-connected PV issue is that PV cells produce AC while power grids use DC.
ABoth Statement I and Statement II are true
BBoth Statement I and Statement II are false
CStatement I is true but Statement II is false ✓ Correct
DStatement I is false but Statement II is true
Correct answer: (C) Statement I is true but Statement II is false — The answer is that Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
Explanation
★The answer is that Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
★Photovoltaic panels are indeed increasingly used to add to grid electricity, so Statement I is true.
★In fact PV cells produce direct current, while the grid runs on alternating current, so the two are the other way round.
★So the claim that PV cells produce AC and grids use DC makes Statement II false.
★Thus only the first statement holds.
★This is why an inverter is needed to feed PV power into the grid.
★So the answer is that Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
