Paper 1 · People, Development and Environment UGC NET June 2023 (22.06.2023) Shift-I
Given below are two statements. Statement I: The possibility of oxygen depletion is high in running and turbulent water bodies. Statement II: Oxygen is added to water by the photosynthesis of green plants, algae and cyanobacteria. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
  • Statement I: The possibility of oxygen depletion is high in running and turbulent water bodies.
  • Statement II: Oxygen is added to water by the photosynthesis of green plants, algae and cyanobacteria.
ABoth Statement I and Statement II are correct
BBoth Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
CStatement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
DStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct ✓ Correct
Correct answer: (D) Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct — Statement I is incorrect and Statement II is correct, so the answer is Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
Explanation
Statement I is incorrect and Statement II is correct, so the answer is Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
Running and turbulent water mixes with air and takes in oxygen from it.
So oxygen depletion is low, not high, in such water, making statement I incorrect.
Green plants, algae and cyanobacteria release oxygen during photosynthesis.
This oxygen dissolves into the surrounding water.
So statement II correctly describes how oxygen is added to water.
Therefore statement I is incorrect while statement II is correct.
