Paper 1 · Logical Reasoning UGC NET December 2021 June 2022 (23.09.2022) Shift-II
Given below are two statements. Statement I: 'To slow a beast, you break its limbs. To slow a nation you break its people' is an example of an analogical argument. Statement II: The same saying is an example of the non-argumentative use of analogy. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
  • Statement I: The saying about slowing a beast and a nation is an example of an analogical argument.
  • Statement II: The same saying is an example of the non-argumentative use of analogy.
ABoth Statement I and Statement II are true
BBoth Statement I and Statement II are false
CStatement I is true but Statement II is false
DStatement I is false but Statement II is true ✓ Correct
Correct answer: (D) Statement I is false but Statement II is true — The answer is that Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
Explanation
The answer is that Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
The saying draws a vivid comparison but does not argue from one case to a conclusion about another.
So calling it an analogical argument makes Statement I false.
It uses the analogy for rhetorical effect rather than to prove a point.
So it is a non-argumentative use of analogy, making Statement II true.
Thus only the second statement holds.
So the answer is that Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
