If 40% of a number x is added to another number y, then y becomes 125% of its previous value. Find which of the following is true regarding the values of x and y ?

AX/y = 8/5
BX = y
CX/y = 5/8 ✓ Correct
DX/y = 3/4
Correct answer: (C) X/y = 5/8
Explanation

The relation is x/y = 5/8.

Adding 40% of x to y makes y grow to 125% of itself.

So y + 0.4x = 1.25y.

This gives 0.4x = 0.25y, hence x/y = 0.25/0.4.

Simplifying, x/y = 25/40 = 5/8.
