Passage
The table shows the city-wise break-up of population in terms of males, females and transgenders of five cities A to E. Some values are percentages and some are numbers. For A the males are 45 percent, the females are 30 percent and the transgenders are 2000. For B the males are 50 percent, the females are 3000 and the transgenders are 35 percent. For C the males are 8000, the females are 35 percent and the transgenders are 15 percent. For D the males are 45 percent, the females are 3600 and the transgenders are 25 percent. For E the males are 38 percent, the females are 32 percent and the transgenders are 4200. Based on the data, answer the questions.
If the ratio of literate males to illiterate males of City D is 11:7, then what is the difference between the number of literate males and the number of illiterate males of City D?
A900
B1050
C800
D1200 ✓ Correct
Correct answer: (D) 1200 — The answer is 1200.
Explanation
★The answer is 1200.
★In City D the females are 100 minus 45 plus 25, which is 30 percent, and this equals 3600, so the total is 12000.
★So the males in City D are 45 percent of 12000, which is 5400.
★Splitting 5400 in the ratio 11 to 7 gives eighteen parts, so one part is 300.
★The difference is 11 parts minus 7 parts, which is 4 parts, or 4 times 300.
★That equals 1200.
★So the answer is 1200.
