The ratio of the present ages of two persons A and B is 4:3. If 4 years ago the ratio of their ages was 2:1, what is the present age of A and B in years respectively?
A8, 6 ✓ Correct
B9, 7
C12, 9
D9, 12
Correct answer: (A) 8, 6 — The answer is 8 and 6.
Explanation
The answer is 8 and 6.
Let the present ages be 4x for A and 3x for B.
Four years ago the ages were 4x minus 4 and 3x minus 4, in the ratio 2 to 1.
Solving 4x minus 4 equals 2 times 3x minus 4 gives x equal to 2.
So A is 4 times 2, which is 8, and B is 3 times 2, which is 6.
Thus the present ages are 8 and 6 years.
So the answer is 8 and 6.
