Paper 1 · Data Interpretation
UGC NET June 2023 (13.06.2023) Shift-II
Passage
The following table shows the percentage distribution of five different models (A to E) of mobile phones produced by a company during the years 2021 and 2022. The total number of mobile phones produced by the company in 2021 and 2022 is 4,50,000 and 5,20,000 respectively. Year-wise percentage distribution of models: in 2021 A is 15%, B is 25%, C is 30%, D is 10%, E is 20%; in 2022 A is 10%, B is 30%, C is 25%, D is 25%, E is 10%. Based on the data in the table, answer the questions that follow.
What is the difference between the number of Model-C mobile phones produced by the company in the years 2021 and 2022?
A5000 ✓ Correct
B7500
C10000
D2500
Correct answer: (A) 5000 — The difference is 5,000 phones, so the answer is 5,000.
Explanation
★The difference is 5,000 phones, so the answer is 5,000.
★Model-C phones in 2021 are 30% of 4,50,000, which is 1,35,000.
★Model-C phones in 2022 are 25% of 5,20,000, which is 1,30,000.
★The difference is 1,35,000 minus 1,30,000, which is 5,000.
★A larger percentage on a smaller base can still exceed a smaller percentage on a larger base.
★Here the 2021 count is slightly higher despite the lower total production that year.
★The other options come from arithmetic slips in the two percentage calculations.
