A family comprises 3 persons A, B and C. The age of A is four times that of B. In four years' time, A will be 40 years old. The age of C was half the age of A four years ago. Find the present ages of B and C, in years, respectively.
A9, 20 ✓ Correct
B9, 16
C16, 32
D12, 18
Correct answer: (A) 9, 20
Explanation
B is 9 years and C is 20 years old now.
A will be 40 in four years, so A now = 40 - 4 = 36.
A = 4 x B gives B = 36/4 = 9.
Four years ago A was 36 - 4 = 32, and C then was half of that = 16.
So C now = 16 + 4 = 20.
Present ages of B and C are 9 and 20.
