A man, a woman and a boy can do a piece of work in 6, 9 and 18 days, respectively. How many boys should assist one man and one woman to do the work in one day?

Correct answer: (A) 13 — Thirteen boys are needed, so the answer is 13.
Explanation
Thirteen boys are needed, so the answer is 13.
A man does 1/6 of the work in a day and a woman does 1/9.
A boy does 1/18 of the work in a day.
To finish in one day, one man, one woman and x boys must complete the whole work.
So 1/6 plus 1/9 plus x/18 equals 1.
Multiplying throughout by 18 gives 3 plus 2 plus x equals 18.
Solving gives x equals 13 boys.
