Paper 1 · People, Development and Environment UGC NET December 2023 (14.12.2023) Shift-I
Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion (A) and the other labelled as Reason (R). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

Assertion (A): PM10 is preferred over Total Suspended Particles (TSP) for air quality monitoring studies.

Reason (R): Particles larger than 10 micron are a better indicator of the potential health effects of particulate air pollution.

ABoth (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
BBoth (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
C(A) is correct but (R) is not correct ✓ Correct
D(A) is not correct but (R) is correct
Correct answer: (C) (A) is correct but (R) is not correct — The assertion is correct but the reason is not, so the answer is that A is correct but R is not correct.
Explanation
The assertion is correct but the reason is not, so the answer is that A is correct but R is not correct.
PM10 refers to particles with a diameter of 10 micron or less.
It is preferred over total suspended particles because it targets the harmful respirable fraction.
So the assertion about preferring PM10 is correct.
The reason is wrong because smaller particles, not larger ones, penetrate deep into the lungs.
Particles smaller than 10 micron pose the greatest health risk, so the reason is false.
