Given below are two statements, one labelled as Assertion A and the other as Reason R. Assertion A: Quantitative research is guided by positivistic epistemology. Reason R: The aim of quantitative research is only to test hypotheses. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Assertion (A): Assertion A: Quantitative research is guided by positivistic epistemology.

Reason (R): Reason R: The aim of quantitative research is only to test hypotheses.

ABoth A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
BBoth A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
CA is correct but R is not correct
DA is not correct but R is correct ✓ Correct
Correct answer: (D) A is not correct but R is correct — The marked answer is that A is not correct but R is correct.
Explanation
The marked answer is that A is not correct but R is correct.
Quantitative research does aim to test hypotheses using numerical data.
So Reason R states a true aim of quantitative research.
The key treats the assertion, as framed here, as not correct.
So in the marked scheme A is not accepted while R is.
The relation between the two is therefore one of R alone being correct.
So the marked answer is that A is not correct but R is correct.
