Paper 1 · People, Development and Environment UGC NET December 2022 (01.03.2023) Shift-II
Given below are two statements. Statement I: Rivers and lakes that have low biological productivity are said to be atrophic. Statement II: Rivers and lakes that are rich in organisms and organic materials are called oligotrophic. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
  • Statement I: Rivers and lakes that have low biological productivity are said to be atrophic.
  • Statement II: Rivers and lakes that are rich in organisms and organic materials are called oligotrophic.
ABoth Statement I and Statement II are true
BBoth Statement I and Statement II are false ✓ Correct
CStatement I is true but Statement II is false
DStatement I is false but Statement II is true
Correct answer: (B) Both Statement I and Statement II are false — Both statements are false, so the answer is that both Statement I and Statement II are false.
Explanation
Both statements are false, so the answer is that both Statement I and Statement II are false.
Waters with low biological productivity are actually called oligotrophic.
So calling low-productivity waters atrophic is wrong, making statement I false.
Waters rich in organisms and organic material are actually called eutrophic.
So calling such rich waters oligotrophic is wrong, making statement II false.
The two terms have been misapplied in both statements.
Therefore both statements are false.
