Passage
The following table shows the number of votes polled in a college election over five years from 2018 to 2022, along with the percentage of valid votes and the ratio of valid votes of males to females. Known figures: in 2018 the male-to-female valid-vote ratio is 5:3; in 2019 the votes polled are 1000 with a male-to-female ratio 5:4; in 2020 the votes polled are 2000 with 38 percent valid; in 2021 the valid percentage is 60 with a male-to-female ratio 7:5; in 2022 the votes polled are 5000 with 40 percent valid. Some values are missing and are to be calculated if required. Based on the data, answer the questions that follow.
In 2021, if the difference between the number of valid votes polled by males and females was 300, then the number of votes polled in 2021 was
A3690
B3000 ✓ Correct
C3120
D3440
Correct answer: (B) 3000 — The votes polled in 2021 were 3000, so the answer is 3000.
Explanation
The votes polled in 2021 were 3000, so the answer is 3000.
The 2021 male-to-female valid-vote ratio is 7 to 5.
Let the male valid votes be 7x and the female valid votes be 5x.
Their difference is 7x minus 5x, which is 2x, and this equals 300.
So x is 150 and the total valid votes are 12x, which is 1800.
These valid votes are 60 percent of the votes polled.
So the votes polled are 1800 times 100 over 60, which is 3000.
