The three divisions of signs identified by Charles Peirce are the iconic, the indexical and the symbolic.

Statement 3, the iconic, fits because such signs resemble what they stand for, as a picture or emoticon looks like its object.

Statement 4, the indexical, fits because such signs point to their object through a direct link, as smoke indexes fire.

Statement 5, the symbolic, fits because such signs stand for their object only by social convention, as words do.

The modular is not one of Peirce's sign types and does not belong to this triad.

The prescriptive too lies outside Peirce's scheme, which rests solely on icon, index and symbol.
