There are three positive numbers. One-third of the average of all three is 8 less than the highest number. If the average of the lowest and the second-lowest number is 8, what is the highest number?
A9
B10
C11 ✓ Correct
D12
Correct answer: (C) 11 — The highest number is 11, so that is the answer.
Explanation
The highest number is 11, so that is the answer.
Let the highest be Z and the average be A.
Z minus A over 3 equals 8.
The two smaller numbers sum to 16.
Substituting gives Z minus (16 plus Z) over 9 equals 8, so 8Z is 88.
So Z is 11.
