Paper 1 · Data Interpretation
UGC NET June 2023 (20.06.2023) Shift-II
Passage
The following table shows, for four newspapers W, X, Y and Z, the number of copies printed in each printing press (shown in brackets) and the number of copies distributed in a day across four cities. Newspaper W is printed in 500 copies and distributed as 1500, 1000, 500 and 500 across Cities 1 to 4. Newspaper X is printed in 10000 copies and distributed as 3000, 3500, 1500 and 1000. Newspaper Y is printed in 10000 copies and distributed as 35000, 3000, 1500 and 500. Newspaper Z is printed in 50000 copies and distributed as 1000, 1000, 500 and 1500. Based on the data in the table, answer the questions that follow.
What is the percentage of Newspaper Y's distribution in the total distribution?
A33% ✓ Correct
B37%
C34%
D35%
Correct answer: (A) 33% — The National Testing Agency dropped this item from evaluation, so no option is a settled key.
Explanation
★The National Testing Agency dropped this item from evaluation, so no option is a settled key.
★The question asks for Newspaper Y's share of the total distribution.
★In the printed table Newspaper Y's City 1 figure appears as 35000, far larger than every other value.
★This value is inconsistent with the small distribution figures for the other newspapers.
★Because of this printing anomaly the percentage cannot be computed reliably.
★So the four options do not correspond to a sound calculation.
★For that reason the agency cancelled the question.
