UGC NET December 2022 (13.03.2023) Shift-II (Home Science)
Passage
Table 1 shows the percentage distribution of the number of students studying in six Law Colleges A to F, and Table 2 shows the percentage distribution of students across three sections I, II and III of each of the five classes (1st to 5th year) of College D. The college-wise shares in Table 1 are A eight and one third percent, B 10 percent, C 20 percent, D sixteen and two thirds percent, E 30 percent and F 15 percent. In Table 2 the section I, II and III percentages by class are: 1st year 30, 35 and 35; 2nd year 50, 25 and 25; 3rd year 20, 55 and 25; 4th year 45, 35 and 20; and 5th year 35, 30 and 35. There are 1080 students in College C, and each class of College D has the same number of students. Based on the data, answer the questions.
What is the total of the number of students in Section I taken across all classes of College D? (Take each class of College D as 900 students, as in the source solution.)
A320
B324 ✓ Correct
C250
D252
Correct answer: (B) 324 — The answer is 324.
Explanation
★The answer is 324.
★Section I percentages across the classes are 30, 50, 20, 45 and 35.
★Applying each to 900 gives 270, 450, 180, 405 and 315.
★The sum of these values is 1620.
★The source averages this over the five classes.
★So 1620 divided by 5 gives 324.
★So the answer is 324.
