What will be the male population above the poverty line for State A if the female population below the poverty line for State A is 2.1 million?
State A has 35 percent below the poverty line with a male to female ratio of 5 to 6.
So below-poverty females are 6 by 11 of the below-poverty population.
Setting 0.35 times total times 6 by 11 equal to 2.1 million gives a total of 11 million.
Above the poverty line, 65 percent of 11 million is the above-poverty population.
The above-poverty male to female ratio is 6 to 7, so males are 6 by 13.
Thus males above the line equal 11 million times 0.65 times 6 by 13, which is 3.3 million.
The problem chains one ratio to find the total, then another to find the sub-group.
