What will be the number of females above the poverty line in State D, if the population of State D is 8 million?
A3 million
B2.83 million
C2.63 million
D2.43 million ✓ Correct
Correct answer: (D) 2.43 million — State D has 19 percent below the poverty line, so 81 percent are above it.
Explanation
★State D has 19 percent below the poverty line, so 81 percent are above it.
★Above the poverty line the male to female ratio in State D is 5 to 3.
★So females are 3 by 8 of the above-poverty population.
★The above-poverty population is 81 percent of 8 million.
★Females equal 8 million times 0.81 times 3 by 8, which is 2.43 million.
★Table problems require applying the poverty percentage first, then the gender ratio.
★Reading the correct row and the correct ratio prevents errors here.
