Knowledge, the recall of facts, is the lowest and most basic level.

Comprehension, the grasp of meaning, follows recall of information.

Analysis breaks material into parts, standing above simple understanding.

Synthesis combines parts into a new whole, and Evaluation, the judging of worth, is the highest level.

This is Bloom's 1956 taxonomy of the cognitive domain, later revised by Anderson and Krathwohl in 2001.
