Passage
The table shows the percentage distribution of the population across five age groups for five cities A to E. The age groups are 0 to 13, 13 to 19, 19 to 35, 35 to 60 and above 60 years. The percentages are: City A 18, 12, 24, 30 and 16; City B 16, 18, 22, 29 and 15; City C 20, 20, 20, 25 and 15; City D 15, 18, 21, 26 and 20; City E 18, 15, 25, 24 and 18. Based on the data, answer the questions that follow.
If the population of city C and city D in the age group above 60 years is 24,000 each, then what is the sum of the total populations of city C and city D?
A2.4 lakh
B2.8 lakh ✓ Correct
C3.2 lakh
D4.8 lakh
Correct answer: (B) 2.8 lakh — The sum of the total populations is 2.8 lakh, so that is the answer.
Explanation
★The sum of the total populations is 2.8 lakh, so that is the answer.
★In city C the above-60 group is 15 percent and equals 24,000, so the total C is 1,60,000.
★In city D the above-60 group is 20 percent and equals 24,000, so the total D is 1,20,000.
★Adding these gives 1,60,000 plus 1,20,000.
★That is 2,80,000.
★So the sum is 2.8 lakh.
