Paper 1 · Data Interpretation
UGC NET June 2024 Cancelled (18.06.2024) Shift-I
Passage
The following table shows the percentage distribution of the number of readers of an IT magazine in the years 2019 and 2023 among six different cities A to F. The city-wise percentage of readers is: City A, 10 percent in 2019 and 15 percent in 2023; City B, 14 percent and 16 percent; City C, 17 percent and 28 percent; City D, 9 percent and 10 percent; City E, 24 percent and 9 percent; City F, 26 percent and 22 percent. Based on the data in the table, answer the questions that follow.
If the ratio of the number of readers from City-A in the year 2019 to that in 2023 was 2:5, then what was the ratio of the number of readers from all six cities together in the year 2019 to that in 2023?
A3 : 5 ✓ Correct
B4 : 5
C4 : 9
D2 : 5
Correct answer: (A) 3 : 5 — The ratio of totals is 3 to 5, so that is the answer.
Explanation
★The ratio of totals is 3 to 5, so that is the answer.
★City A is 10 percent of the 2019 total and 15 percent of the 2023 total.
★So the 2019 total is City A over 0.10 and the 2023 total is City A over 0.15.
★The given City A ratio for 2019 to 2023 is 2 to 5.
★Dividing 2 over 0.10 by 5 over 0.15 gives 20 over about 33.3.
★This simplifies to 3 to 5, the ratio of the totals.
