Passage
The following table shows the average speed (in km per hour) of five trains A to E over six days from Monday to Saturday. Some values are missing and are to be calculated if required. Train A: 72, 80, missing, 64, 54, missing. Train B: 88, missing, 80, missing, 72, 90. Train C: 54, 70, 72, missing, 64, 60. Train D: missing, 120, 95, missing, 90, 110. Train E: 72, 80, 84, 75, missing, missing (the days run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday). Based on the data, answer the questions that follow.
If train B covers a total distance of 3400 km during all six days by taking a total time of 40 hours, then the average speed of this train over all six days together is what percent less than the average speed of this train on Monday? (Rounded off to two decimal places.)
A6.33
B4.67
C3.41 ✓ Correct
D5.25
Correct answer: (C) 3.41 — The decrease is about 3.41 percent, so the answer is 3.41.
Explanation
★The decrease is about 3.41 percent, so the answer is 3.41.
★Train B covers 3400 km in 40 hours over the six days.
★So its overall average speed is 3400 divided by 40, which is 85 km per hour.
★Its average speed on Monday is 88 km per hour.
★The shortfall is 88 minus 85, which is 3.
★As a percentage of 88 this is 3 over 88 times 100.
★That is about 3.41 percent.
