UGC NET June 2023 (19.06.2023) Shift-II
Passage
The following table shows the number of votes polled in a college election over five years from 2018 to 2022, along with the percentage of valid votes and the ratio of valid votes of males to females. Known figures: in 2018 the male-to-female valid-vote ratio is 5:3; in 2019 the votes polled are 1000 with a male-to-female ratio 5:4; in 2020 the votes polled are 2000 with 38 percent valid; in 2021 the valid percentage is 60 with a male-to-female ratio 7:5; in 2022 the votes polled are 5000 with 40 percent valid. Some values are missing and are to be calculated if required. Based on the data, answer the questions that follow.
In the year 2020, if the number of valid votes of females was 300, then what was the ratio of valid votes of males to females in the same year?
A15:19
B13:11
C23:15 ✓ Correct
D13:5
Correct answer: (C) 23:15 — The ratio of male to female valid votes is 23 to 15, so the answer is 23 to 15.
Explanation
★The ratio of male to female valid votes is 23 to 15, so the answer is 23 to 15.
★In 2020 the votes polled were 2000 with 38 percent valid.
★So the total valid votes are 2000 times 38 over 100, which is 760.
★The female valid votes are given as 300.
★So the male valid votes are 760 minus 300, which is 460.
★The ratio is therefore 460 to 300.
★Dividing both by 20 gives 23 to 15.
