Passage
The table shows the proportion of students who passed in three graduation streams, namely Arts, Science and Commerce, from seven cities A to G, along with the ratio of males (M) to females (F) for the three streams. The Arts:Science:Commerce proportion and the M:F ratios for Arts, Science and Commerce respectively are: City A 2:4:5, with 31:14, 23:27 and 11:7; City B 7:2:4, with 37:33, 43:32 and 29:21; City C 1:4:2, with 34:16, 57:43 and 31:29; City D 5:7:4, with 17:13, 51:33 and 23:17; City E 4:3:8, with 23:17, 41:34 and 57:23; City F 2:4:3, with 47:28, 11:7 and 16:11; City G 3:5:4, with 29:21, 27:24 and 53:47. Based on the data, answer the questions that follow.
For City-A, if the total number of males who passed in Arts is 2480, then what is the difference between the number of students who passed in Commerce and that in Science?
A600
B1000
C1400
D1800 ✓ Correct
Correct answer: (D) 1800 — The difference is 1800, so that is the answer.
Explanation
★The difference is 1800, so that is the answer.
★City-A has the Arts:Science:Commerce proportion 2:4:5.
★In Arts the M:F ratio is 31:14, so males are 31 of 45 parts of the Arts group.
★Arts is 2 parts, so Arts males are 2x times 31 over 45, which equals 2480, giving x as 1800.
★Commerce is 5 parts and Science is 4 parts, so their difference is one part.
★One part is 1800, so the difference is 1800.
