The table shows the proportion of students who passed in three graduation streams, namely Arts, Science and Commerce, from seven cities A to G, along with the ratio of males (M) to females (F) for the three streams. The Arts:Science:Commerce proportion and the M:F ratios for Arts, Science and Commerce respectively are: City A 2:4:5, with 31:14, 23:27 and 11:7; City B 7:2:4, with 37:33, 43:32 and 29:21; City C 1:4:2, with 34:16, 57:43 and 31:29; City D 5:7:4, with 17:13, 51:33 and 23:17; City E 4:3:8, with 23:17, 41:34 and 57:23; City F 2:4:3, with 47:28, 11:7 and 16:11; City G 3:5:4, with 29:21, 27:24 and 53:47. Based on the data, answer the questions that follow.
If the number of females who passed in Arts from City-C is 768, then the number of males who passed in Commerce from City-C is approximately what percentage of the number of students who passed from City-C?
A14.76 ✓ Correct
B18.24
C27.8
D32.5
Correct answer: (A) 14.76 — The Commerce males are about 14.76 percent of the total, so that is the answer.
Explanation
★The Commerce males are about 14.76 percent of the total, so that is the answer.
★City-C has the Arts:Science:Commerce proportion 1:4:2, so the total is 7 parts.
★In Arts the M:F ratio is 34:16, so females are 16 of 50 parts of the Arts group.
★Arts females equal 768, which gives one part as 2400, so the total is 16800.
★Commerce is 2 parts with M:F 31:29, so Commerce males are 2 times 2400 times 31 over 60, which is 2480.
★2480 out of 16800 is about 14.76 percent.
