The following table shows the number of students who appeared in a Common Entrance Test (CET) from six schools A to F during 2020 to 2022, and the ratio of passed (P) to failed (F) students among them. In 2020 the appeared count and the P to F ratio are A 1292 and 11 to 8, B 1694 and 4 to 7, C 1620 and 8 to 7, D 1752 and 7 to 5, E 1740 and 3 to 2, and F 1972 and 17 to 12. In 2021 they are A 1508 and 7 to 6, B 1690 and 8 to 5, C 1584 and 7 to 4, D 1656 and 11 to 7, E 1452 and 7 to 4, and F 1734 and 12 to 5. In 2022 they are A 1344 and 3 to 5, B 1904 and 9 to 8, C 1274 and 4 to 3, D 1976 and 7 to 12, E 1430 and 8 to 5, and F 1848 and 8 to 13. Based on the data in the table, answer the questions that follow.
What is the total number of students who failed from School F in all three years together?
A2290
B2470 ✓ Correct
C2650
D2830
Correct answer: (B) 2470 — The total failed from School F is 2470, so the answer is 2470.
Explanation
★The total failed from School F is 2470, so the answer is 2470.
★In 2020 School F had 1972 students in the ratio 17 to 12, so 12 parts of 29 failed, which is 816.
★In 2021 it had 1734 students in the ratio 12 to 5, so 5 parts of 17 failed, which is 510.
★In 2022 it had 1848 students in the ratio 8 to 13, so 13 parts of 21 failed, which is 1144.
★Adding these gives 816 plus 510 plus 1144.
★That equals 2470.
★So the answer is 2470.
