Paper 1 · Data Interpretation UGC NET December 2022 (11.03.2023) Shift-II (Sociology)
Passage
The following table gives the installed capacity of electricity in gigawatts from solar, wind and coal, along with the population, for two states X and Y in the years 2011 and 2021. In State X the figures are: in 2011 solar 20, wind 10 and coal 40, with a population of 50 million; in 2021 solar 28, wind 15 and coal 42, with a population of 60 million. In State Y the figures are: in 2011 solar 15, wind 8 and coal 50, with a population of 60 million; in 2021 solar 20, wind 10 and coal 55, with a population of 68 million. Based on the data in the table, answer the questions that follow.
What was the per capita availability of electricity in State X in the year 2021?
AAbout 1.21 kW
BAbout 1.41 kW ✓ Correct
CAbout 1.25 kW
DAbout 1.62 kW
Correct answer: (B) About 1.41 kW — The per capita availability is about 1.41 kW, so the answer is about 1.41 kW.
Explanation
The per capita availability is about 1.41 kW, so the answer is about 1.41 kW.
In 2021 State X had solar 28, wind 15 and coal 42.
So its total installed capacity is 85 gigawatts.
Its population in 2021 was 60 million.
Per capita availability is the total capacity divided by the population.
So it is 85 gigawatts over 60 million, which is about 1.41 kW.
So the answer is about 1.41 kW.
